Apple Abandons Its XServe Raid, for the Better

Apple has quietly pulled out from the Enterprise Storage market and will transit its business to Promise (head to the XServe Raid homepage). That market is a cut-throat one and it seems that Apple could better use its personal to do higher margins business. This is not surprising and if anything that’s a good sign – it means that Apple keeps re-evaluating all of its businesses instead of getting complacent.

Apple Announces 2GB iPod Shuffle, $49 1GB Shuffle

Apple has dropped the price of the 1GB iPod Shuffle to $49 – this sounds somewhat like a better price for such a low-tech player. The reason behind the cut is the introduction of the 2GB iPod Shuffle, priced at $69, a rather expensive price for a 2GB player without a display.

User-set Multitouch Patent Filing

User-set Multitouch Patent Filing

Apple looks set to revolutionize the touch-based user interface further with this filing that enables users to define their very own gesture-based commands in Mac OS X. I guess this is a pretty viable idea as many people like to customize their user interface experience, and one person has different preference from another. This patent filing from Apple will see a control panel add basic and advanced levels of multitouch control to existing trackpad options. Should you be a little bit more adventurous and try the advanced mode, you can always opt for different finger patterns, chords and even different swiping motions. There is no word on an official release of hardware that uses this patent, but we will probably see something interesting from Cupertino in the near future.

iPod Shuffle Price Drop

I guess there is no better time than now to pick up a brand new iPod Shuffle if you've ever eyed one. Apple has dropped the 1GB model to a mere $49 from the $79 level, and has also rolled out a new 2GB Shuffle that retails for just $79. The 2GB model will be available later this month, and you can snap up the 1GB model today if you haven't done so already. I wonder how folks who bought the 1GB iPod Shuffle yesterday felt. Epoq Quad-Band GSM Wristphone

Calling all three of you Dick Tracy fans! Here's the Epoq Quad-Band GSM wristphone for you to chat away on a timepiece while looking daft. At least it doesn't look as corny as previous iterations, featuring the hands of an analog watch on its OLED display. You don't have to worry about running out of juice anytime soon, since the Epoq EGP-WP88 boasts a built-in kinetic recharge system that converts the wearer's motion to energy. The EGP-WP88 won't come cheap though, retailing for $529.95 when available at the end of this month. I'd recommend getting a Bluetooth headset to go along with it.

Intel Centrino Chips To Surpass 3.0GHz Mark

This spring will see Intel, er, spring into action with its next-generation Centrino notebook platform that will surpass the 3.0GHz mark, bringing even more computing power wherever you go. This new processor will feature a 1066MHz front-side bus. Needless to say, you will be seeing this new processor in action inside Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro offerings eventually. They'll cost a bomb though, so now would be a good time to start saving already.

Kenwood AS-IP300 iPod Dock

Now here's an iPod dock that looks more like a spaceship than anything else. The Kenwood AS-IP300 comes in either white or black varieties, measuring 380mm x 157mm x 221mm and weighing 1kg, making it a comfortable addition to any living room. Two 1.9W speakers pump out your favorite tunes. I'd get this just for the design and not sound quality, but the €95 price tag makes me think twice.

Obvious: SEGA is Happy with Sonic for iPod

SEGA said that Sonic for iPod was a “fantastic opportunity”. Sega of America’s Simon Jeffrey also said:

“The iPod is arguably the most pervasive cross-demographic piece of consumer electronics today. There are no age or fashion barriers to iPod adoption, and making Sonic available to tens of millions of iPod owners really is a fantastic opportunity for us.”

In the end of the day, that’s not every day that you can re-purpose a past franchise and squeeze money out of it. Fortunately companies like SEGA, mobile computing will give them a chance to sell glorious franchises again.

Apple Patent on Podmaps Hints at Strong Navigation System

Apple Patent on Podmaps Hints at Strong Navigation System

This patent application from Apple is for an application called Podmap. It looks like it has everything that is needed to build a GPS application that the one found in in-car navigation systems. Of course, this could be used to turn an iPod Touch or an iPhone into a fully-featured GPS navigation system or it could be used to build a stand-alone device, an iGPS, if you want.

Turning existing devices into better navigation devices would make more sense in the short term. After all, we believe that the iPhone 2 will have a GPS chip and a 3G connection, which would be required to access the network described above. However, a stand-along GPS device that has a 4.3” to 7” display is not completely out of the question.

Note that this is “just” a patent application. It does not mean that Apple is actually working on it, but at least, they are “thinking” about it.

If you think the standard iPod touch isn't a good enough present for the other half in your life, then this limited edition designer iPod touch could potentially change your mind. Selfridges is carrying this unique iPod line, featuring hundreds of black Swarovski crystals complete with a special diamond ring design encrusted with 24k gold coated and silver crystals. SuperDrive Replacements For Macs

SuperDrive Replacements for Your Mac

I have been shopping for a super drive replacement, because the one in our MacBook Pro doesn’t work (it never worked in fact). Because it takes ages for Apple to replace it, I thought that I would do it myself. This morning, OWC announced their new SuperDrive replacements for the entire Mac family. Desktop drives cost $30 and laptop ones go for $110 to $120.

We haven’t tested any OWC’s drives, but that’s pretty much a commodity, so I would expect it to “just work”.

iPhone Screen Bubbles

iPhone Screen Bubbles

Looks like the iPhone isn't all that perfect - there are some folks who have already started to see bubble-like distortions making an unwelcome appearance under the iPhone display's glass layer. Good thing Apple will replace these affected iPhones, but seriously - having bubbles surface on your display? I thought that would happen to lower quality handsets only and not a product from Cupertino.
