Wedisk USB Flash Drive
Story posted on: February 20, 2008
Now this is just cute - the Wedisk USB flash drive that looks like a Wiimote, save it comes in a much more pocketable size, courtesy of SolarMemo. The A button will release the USB connector, but that's about all the interactivity you'll be able to get out of it. I'm not sure whether Nintendo's legal eagles approve of this though. The Wedisk will come in various sizes of up to 8GB, but there is no word on pricing at the moment. When will the Nunchuck version roll out?

Thanko SIRE2SET Silent Keyboard
Story posted on: February 20, 2008
For those who love typing late into the night (or surfing questionable websites), there is the Thanko SIRE2SET silent multimedia keyboard. I guess this is best used with an equally silent mouse that Thanko already has. The SIRE2SET keyboard can be hooked up to two PCs through a couple of separate USB connections, where you use a sliding switch on the keyboard to decide which PC you want to work with. Too bad this is a Japan-only product, retailing for $46. I can forsee folks with two workstations having this - one for them to surf the latest celebrity scandals, switching over to the actual work PC whenever the boss walks by.

WiFi Laptop Tracking Security App
Story posted on: February 19, 2008
A firm from the UK claims to have developed a WiFi laptop tracking security application that is smart enough to destroy data within whenever it moves beyond the network . This sounds pretty interesting, but the impact of it on an absent-minded employee could be disastrous. Imagine carrying all your company's secrets on the laptop and bringing it home with you by accident, only to be greeted by General Failure and his mindless messages. I kid - there are probably enough failsafes in the system to prevent something like this happening, and only theft would be a legitimate excuse whenever data magically disappears. This application will cost GBP10 monthly for set up and subscription purposes. A future GPS-enabled connection is in the works that claims to destroy data and get photos of the culprits even without WiFi.

Smart Scroll X Update
Story posted on: February 19, 2008
The iPhone's user interface was certainly a much talked-about point when the handset was first released last year, and I'm sure many out there would also like to see a somewhat similar multi-touch gesture user interface visit the Mac platform. Smart Scroll X allows that to happen on a more subdued scale, where the "Super Wheel" provides the Mac's trackpad with an iPhone-like scrolling feature. This enables users to control a host of trackpad settings as long as you have a simple system preferences plug-in. Another interesting feature is the "Grab Scroll", allowing you to get hold of a window and flick it across the screen. The Smart Scroll X is compatible with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2 and retails for $19.

Symantec Online Backup & Restore Service
Story posted on: February 19, 2008
Symantec Corp. has just announced its online backup and restore service that targets small businesses. This online utility features a host of extras from Symantec, although there is no official word on what these features will be. The online backup & restore service will set you back by $25 a month for 5GB, and $38 monthly for 10GB. Multiply that by 12 and you get a pretty high number - I'd rather invest in a 500GB hard drive as my backup solution instead. Still, at least with online backup you don't have to worry about losing your physical media. Women, remember to scan all those precious wedding photos and upload them here so that you can save yourself a whole lot of tears and heartaches in case of a fire or flood.

Wow-Pen Joy, an Oddly-Shaped Ergonomic Mouse
Story posted on: February 19, 2008
It’s not clear where the Joy is when using this mouse, but Korean Company WOW Technology is planning to unleash the beast in North America and Sweden within a month.
The idea behind the ergonomics is that this shape is deemed by WOW to use a more natural hand stance. While that might be true for a LEGO character, I’m not convinced that this is valid for humans. Again, I should reserve my final judgment until I can try it – I’m just thinking out loud here.

Floppy Disk Drive with 7–in-1 Card Reader
Story posted on: February 19, 2008
Who knew that the humble floppy disk drive would've died a fair number of years ago as USB flash drives became the de facto standard of carrying data around. The Floppy Disk Drive with 7–in-1 Card Reader merges both the old and new, allowing you to check out all your DOS-based games on the 3.5" floppy or perform a backup operation of all your precious data stored across a gamut of memory cards including Smart Media, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Secure Digital, MultiMedia Card, and MicroDrive. This unique floppy disk drive retails for £19.99, but I think you're better off buying a dedicated memory card reader instead. After all, who uses floppies these days?

Intel Dual Quad-Core D5400XS Skulltrail Motherboard is Available
Story posted on: February 19, 2008
[GDC 2008] Intel just announced the availability of the D5400XS motherboard based on the Skulltrail platform (now called Dual Socket Extreme Desktop) – a motherboard that can accept two quad-core processors for a total of eight computing cores.
Having more cores is great for applications that have a parallel nature such as video compression or physics. However, it doesn’t boost application like e-mail or word processing proportionally to the number of cores – if at all.
The motherboard should be available immediately. Retail price: $650 for the motherboard, $1500 per CPU (Core 2 Extreme QX9775).
