Pulse Smartpen: Read, Write, Speak and Listen With Your Pen

[DEMO 2008] Today, Livescribe unveils the Pulse Smartpen, a computer embedded in a pen that captures handwriting and simultaneously records audio, synchronizing it to the writing. This is particularly useful for taking notes during a class or a conference! To replay what was recorded while writing a specific word, users simply tap on the word - they can’t miss anything from a presentation. I need to buy one, which would be so useful for tech conferences and interviews!

The Pulse Smartpen is equipped with an ARM 9 processor and a high speed infrared camera with a Dot Positioning System (DPS) that works with the Dot paper Notebook; the micro dots printed on the paper tell the Pulse Smartpen where a user is writing or taping. The Paper Replay Notebook cost around the same price as a regular notebook, and users can print their own dot paper for free on their personal printers.

The pen comes with a 3D recording headset especially designed for far-field recording, each earbud has an embedded microphone to record in large room or noisy environment. The goal is to record exactly what’s coming into both ears.

TAG Reading System, the new learn-to-read device from LeapFrog

Story posted on: January 28, 2008

TAG Reading System, the new learn-to-read device from LeapFrog

[DEMO 08] Leapfrog is coming at DEMO with its new reading system, the Tag Reading System. This pen-shaped device interacts directly with real books: by simply touching the Tag reader anywhere on any page of a specially printed book, children can hear words and stories read aloud.

The Leapfrog Connect Application (PC/Mac) allows users to download and manage audio for each book, and with 16 MB build-in flash memory, the Tag Reader holds up to five books.

An infrared camera placed in the tip of the Tag reader reads dotted media and works as an imaging system to recognize letters, words and symbols printed with micro-dots. This technology seems similar to the one used in the more advanced Pulse SmartPen also launching today at DEMO.

The Tag Reading System will be available this summer 2008 for $49.99, Tag books and Activity books will be $13.99 each. We have seen a similar device at CES from the Chinese manufacturer Aigo. Learn more on the Tag reader website leapfrog.com/tag. This article will be updated with the link to the demonstration video in the next few days.

PCMobilzr: Control Your PC from Your Mobile Phone

[DEMO 08] Rove Mobile Inc. unveils its new mobile application that enables users to have a remote access to every file and application on their computer. They can display their PC computer’s desktop and control the keyboard and mouse from their Black Berry or Windows mobile phone. The client application can be downloaded from the computer or the mobile device. Users can access their computer simply using a username and password for a monthly subscription rate of $9.50 which feels expensive to me.

According to Chris Shipley, executive producer of the DEMO Conference, “PCMobilizr is impressive […]. If I forget a document, or need a file, a spreadsheet – anything on my computer – I can now access, edit, and even print directly from my phone. All with super convenience.” I have to try it as soon as possible to see how impressive it really is.

A similar Remote Desktop functionality is included in Windows Mobile 6 Pro and there is a related service called SoonR, but I am not sure if it allows to display the PC screen and control the PC mouse and keyboard through the phone in the same way. This article will be updated with the link to the demonstration video in the next days.

EYEALIKE: Visual-based Search to Prevent Online Video Copyright Infringement

[DEMO 08] Eyealike is launching Eyealike Copyright, an application that helps video producers flag copyright infringed content across User Generated (UGC) Websites.

This patent-pending technology is able to analyze and process hundreds of images and video clips per minute by image, motion and face to automatically recognize and flag any video content published illegally online. (Photo) This solution is very interesting, knowing the huge amount of money that copyright infringement could cost both in lawsuit (Viacom $1B lawsuit against YouTube) and profit loss.

Eyealike Copyright is available immediately. The pricing is based on an annual licensing fee and varies depending on CPU, storage size, modules purchased and frequency of utilization. This article will be updated with the link to the demonstration video in the next days.

Point-of-Care: the Physician’s Interactive Notebook

[DEMO 08] This new application built on Adobe Air is an interesting health record solution. Acesis claims that their software is better tailored to the way physicians work and think, unlike existing health IT solutions.

Point of care provides a secure and flexible data capture system with structured medical vocabularies for reporting and analysis. Physicians can easily create and modify templates and forms dynamically expand based on prior responses, helping physicians focus on appropriate lines of clinical inquiry.

I would like to test it to see how intuitive the user interface is, even if I am not a doctor. The article will be updated with a link to the demonstration video in the next few days.

SKYFIRE New Mobile Browser Optimized for Flash and Ajax

[DEMO 08] SKYFIRE just launched a new mobile browser, and they claim that users can experience the “real Web” now, accessing any Website wit any Web technology, including dynamic Flash, Ajax, Java and more – at the same speed as they do on a PC.

I have to check this as soon as the Demonstration Pavilion opens on Tuesday morning. If I am lucky, I can meet with the Skyfire folks at the opening reception tonight and get a private demo. I want to make sure that the real user experience matches what they claim on paper.

Skyfire features include a multiple engines Web search with results displayed in multiple tabs, a bookmark system that allows users to get back to specific content location on a page in one click, full screen navigation, thumbnails view and zooming/resizing the Web content to fit the screen.

The Skyfire patent-pending technology is claimed to support all Web technologies, both current and future at speeds comparable to the PC. Skyfire is announcing a private beta to support Windows Mobile phones, both touchscreen and non-touchscreen, in the U.S For more information about the company, visit www.skyfire.com. STEPware Voice-Filtering for Hands-Free Car Kit

[DEMO 08]

STEP Labs’ STEPWare Auto is a technology that can filter out unwanted noise for in-car voice recognition. By noise, they mean “a moving car with the windows down, the radio on, and children playing in the backseat”, which would perturb many voice-recognition systems. At least, that’s what the company claims and we are going to see it on stage during DEMO 08. We will report back to tell you if it really works.

STEP Labs partners with manufacturers who are interested in integrating its voice-filtering technique in their voice-driven solutions.

MoBeam Keychain Barcode is the iPod for Coupons

MoBeam Keychain Barcode is the iPod for Coupons

[DEMO 08] Ecrio’s MoBeam is a small device that can store coupons transferred via Bluetooth. The coupons can originate from many sources, including a cellphone (downloaded from the web/email/SMS) or a coupon-broadcasting station at a retailer. The device is capable of sending light signals that emulate the reflection of a paper barcode to a normal barcode reader. That’s good news for the retailer because there’s no need for expensive equipment expenditures.

From there, it’s not hard to imagine a PC application and an iTunes equivalent of local coupons… Is this “Coupons 2.0”? Also, if that leads to having less SPAM in my (physical) mailbox, that would be great!

On the mobile phone’s display, users select one of the four media types they want to create (photo on the left) and then with one click, they upload the newly created content to the website of their choice (photo on the right).

CellSpin currently supports sharing media with Facebook, Blogger, YouTube, Picasa, Flickr, Live Journal, Live Spaces and eBay. I did not test this service yet, but from the interface photos it seems very simple to use, and that is what I like!
