AT&T Tilt ROM Upgrade

AT&T Tilt ROM Upgrade

HTC has rolled out a ROM upgrade for its Tilt from AT&T. The upgrade version 1.62.502.0 claims to "improve overall device performance and stability, enables dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones for the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and includes Microsoft's Adaptation Kit Update (AKU) 0.4.4". It takes around 10 minutes to complete the ROM's installation. Once done, there are a few steps to follow.

  • Connecting the phone via USB sync cable to a PC whose standby and hibernation modes have been disabled
  • Ensuring that the device has a battery level of at least 50 percent, so it will not die during the upgrade process
  • Backing up all data from the device using Activesync/Windows Mobile Device Center or the built in Sprite Backup utility prior to upgrading
  • Running the ROM upgrade utility using the desktop PC
  • Restoring data to the phone after it has been reset

OpenMoko To Launch Second Handset

OpenMoko To Launch Second Handset

OpenMoko will be rolling out its second handset sometime from March to April this year, and hopefully this new open-platform cell phone will be more of a success compared to the Neo. It seems that user interface improvements will be the main focus point, and hopefully the Neo 2 will see new form factors as well. It would be pretty interesting to see the Neo 2 come in different form factors as well, just like how Nokia's 6500 is marketed in both classic and slider forms.

Second Life Heads For Mobiles

Second Life Heads For Mobiles

Looks like cell phone owners aren't left out of the Second Life loop either, with Vollee planning on rolling out technology which makes it possible for Second Life to run on 3G handsets courtesy of Vollee's streaming media service. Sounds like a pretty impressive feat, considering how Second Life is graphics intensive and requires a whole lot of streaming data. I'd say should this be made available on a large scale, you'd best sign up for an unlimited data plan unless you prefer to pay an insane amount when you receive your bill at the end of the month. Also, one would be prudent to carry phone chargers wherever you go since having a 3G connection on constantly will drain the handset's batteries faster than we're consuming petroleum from the Middle East.

T-Mobile Has an Unlimited Plan Too - $99.99

Available on February 21, T-Mobile customers can choose an unlimited voice, data and SMS plan for $100 per month. This might conclude the avalanche of unlimited plans for the large U.S carriers, but let’s see what smaller ones are going to do.

  • Feb 19: AT&T Unlimited
  • Feb 18: Verizon Unlimited
  • Feb 06: Sprint Unlimited

AT&T Unlimited Voice for $99 and Unlimited Data for $35

AT&T Unlimited Voice for $99 and Unlimited Data for $35

You’ve got to love it when carriers compete (a little) on pricing. This month has been rich in “unlimited announcements”. Sprint drew the first blood by announcing their unlimited plans, followed by Verizon with their more obscure ones and finally AT&T just announced their unlimited plans today.

It’s not really “cheap”, but I’ve seen insane phone bills (from others, of course) when I worked for a large company, so I know that some customers will love this.

Quick survey: do you use more than $99/month for voice minutes on your cellphone? (Leave a comment)

LiMo N705iµ Cell Phone

NEC has just rolled out its LiMo N705iµ cell phone at the recently concluded MWC '08 event, and this hot model comes with the following drool-worthy specifications.

  • 3" 240 x 427 WQVGA resolution display
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • HSDPA connectivity
  • 190 minutes of talktime
Judging by its appearance, can you say 'fingerprint magnet'? I love the way time is displayed on the exterior though. Classy.

Palm Centro for AT&T is Official

The Palm Centro is coming to AT&T and the all white version is probably the cutest to date. Just like previous versions, the Centro targets a younger audience – and that’s why it is price just below $100 (with a contract).

However, customers can find arguably better phones like the Blackjack II for free with a service contract.

Epoq Quad-Band GSM Wristphone

Calling all three of you Dick Tracy fans! Here's the Epoq Quad-Band GSM wristphone for you to chat away on a timepiece while looking daft. At least it doesn't look as corny as previous iterations, featuring the hands of an analog watch on its OLED display. You don't have to worry about running out of juice anytime soon, since the Epoq EGP-WP88 boasts a built-in kinetic recharge system that converts the wearer's motion to energy. The EGP-WP88 won't come cheap though, retailing for $529.95 when available at the end of this month. I'd recommend getting a Bluetooth headset to go along with it.

NVIDIA APX 2500 Mobile Platform SDK Shipping in Weeks

[GDC 2008] NVIDIA shocked a lot of people (especially the competition) when the company showed the APX 2500 for the first time at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The tiny chip contains a GPU, a video processor (VP) and a CPU.

There is a reason why the APX 2500 contains all these components: it allows NVIDIA to control the entire flow of data between the GPU, Video Processor and CPU. Earlier handheld GPUs were sometimes paired with a slow CPU, a slow bus or worse: both.

Zeemote Bluetooth Mobile Game Controller Hands-On

Zeemote Bluetooth Mobile Game Controller Hands-On

[GDC 2008] You might have seen the Zeemote during Mobile World Congress last week, but the company will promote the software development kit (SDK) at the Game Developers Conference being held in San Francisco.

We meet Beth Marcus, the founder and CEO of Zeemote and we had the opportunity to play with it, and to make a long story short: it’s pretty cool. To be honest there was some skepticism when we saw the device in a photo. But we also know that playing with a phone’s keyboard provides a bad experience.

The Zeemote feels good in the hand and it works well as a one-handed game controller. It is also surprisingly light (47g). The Zeemote has an analog joystick, even if most mobile games are built for a digital controller. That will give developers more options when they create their games. Developer John Chasey from Finblade told us that integrating the Zeemote code is easy. Ultimately, the Zeemote success will be measured by the number of games supporting it.

20 Million And Counting...

TV-capable phones in Japan has just surpassed the 20 million mark despite being launched less than a couple of years ago. That's roughly 16% of the population watching TV on their cell phones, never mind the fact that other devices which rely on 1Seg technology like laptops, portable media players, car navigation systems and electronic dictionaries are also in the market. Guess with much traveling being done on the train each day, the PSP and DS library of games aren't enough just yet to satisfy the ever-hunger entertainment appetite within. Would you like to have a 1Seg-equivalent service proliferate society Stateside?
